September is known as the month of wisdom – a time when the holidays are over and the focus shifts back to work and new plans. It’s the perfect time to take a fresh look at your business: what’s working, what needs to change, and what you can let go of.
September is also the perfect time to take that long-awaited idea out of the drawer and finally put it to work. New beginnings are favored right now, so why not take the first step towards your dream business or project?
And if you're looking for specific ideas, at the end of the blog you'll also find 10 simple business ideas that you can start with today.
Where do you start if you have an idea, but it's stalled?
Often, good ideas are born quickly, and in an instant you have a picture in your head of how everything could work. But everyday life takes its toll, and the idea ends up in a drawer. If you want it to really start moving, start with these simple steps:
1. Write down your idea.
An idea in your head often seems much bigger and more complicated than it actually is. When you start writing it down on paper or on your computer, more details emerge and the idea begins to develop on its own. Be sure to also write down the problem you are trying to solve, this will help you answer yourself why this idea is important in the first place and who will benefit from it.
2. Talk to at least five people about your idea.
It’s easy to get stuck when you’re alone because you tend to only see your own perspective. By sharing your idea with five different people – be it friends, colleagues or someone you know who has experience with entrepreneurship – you’ll find out if others see your idea the same way. Feedback can seem intimidating at first, but that’s where the great value lies. Often, these conversations will reveal completely new aspects of your idea that you didn’t even notice.
3. Don’t let your idea stall again – start validating it immediately.
The value of an idea becomes apparent when it is clear who it is intended for. Think about who your target customer is, what they are really interested in, and how you can help them. Try to define your target audience as precisely as possible. If you know who your customer is and what their needs are, you have already taken a huge step forward. Validation doesn’t have to be complicated – it can start with a simple conversation with a potential customer or a test offer to a small group.
4. Do a simple test first. Don't expect perfection.
Instead, create a mini-prototype, a simple survey, or even a one-page demo to see how people react. Testing gives you much more information than endless thinking. A small experiment can bring completely new ideas and confirmation that you are moving in the right direction.
5. Set up a small action plan.
Once the test is done and the feedback is there, think about the next steps. For example: in the next two weeks I will talk to 10 people, in the next month I will test the product with a small group. Time frames provide momentum and help prevent the idea from stalling again.
6. Seek support.
It's easy to lose motivation when you're alone. Find at least one person to talk to about your idea regularly – a mentor, friend, community member or Facebook group. External support and a fresh perspective will help your idea grow and give you confidence that you're on the right track. In Estonia, there are also several organizations and programs where you can get support and advice: for example, the Unemployment Insurance Fund's business start-up support, Tallinn Business incubator, Tehnopol Startup Incubator or the joint institution of Enterprise Estonia and KredEx. Such support structures offer advice, training and financial support so that you can move forward with your idea more confidently.
7. Get your finances in order and seek professional support if necessary.
No matter how good your idea is, without a well-thought-out financial plan, it often remains incomplete. Review your current options: how much you are willing to invest, what costs are unavoidable, and whether you need additional money. If you plan to attract investment in the future, it is especially important that your numbers are in order and transparent. If necessary, seek the help of a financial specialist who can help you set a solid plan for how to handle money and grow your business sustainably.
